 When Guilty Gear Fails...
You know it's bad when I get disappointed in Guilty Gear, considering how much I've touted it about.
Turns out that in the new installment, the Soundtrack is gonna work a bit different than it once did. In GGX and GGX2, each character had their very own theme. But now, in the soon-to-be-released Guilty Gear Isuka, there will instead be fewer themes, each of which encompass two or three characters at once. This annoys me, as it takes away some of the utter uniqueness that each of the characters are supposed to have in that series. And no, I don't call it fair trade for 4-player action, boost mode, customizatin, a new character, and new backgrounds. I want everything, dammit. You hear me Daisuke Ishiwatari? EVERYTHING!
I heard that the same thing happened from Soul Calibur to Soul Calibur 2. What's up with this? Hell, if I made a game, which would probably be an RPG, each character would have MORE than one theme. Different emotional variations on the same melodies. Demanding of the composer? Well, fuck him. That's what he's getting paid for.
Argh. Now I'm just getting sick of this half-assed "quality" music from video games. Like Xenosaga 2. They got the goddess, Yuki Kajiura, to do the soundtrack... no, wait. Only the cinematics. The rest is done by somebody completely different who I don't know about. What a crock of shit! What, they couldn't get her to compose some combat, dungeon, and town themes? Man...
Music is a very important aspect of... well, any visual media, to me. If you ask me, when you screw up the music, you effectively screw up 50% of the game's atmosphere, emotion, and style. It's just inexcuseable. And even moreso when you actually have the resources to make a good sounctrack right in front of you, as in the case of Isuka and Xenosaga 2.
Sigh...

Bluh, yeah... they dropped the old character themes in favor of (what I consider to be) extremely generic half-arsed rock. While I do like some of the tracks in Isuka's lineup, most of them are in my opinion woefully pathetic. Pity really, I was looking foward to having another version of Awe of She to add to the half dozen already in my playlist.

As far as Xenosaga 2 goes, I'll take Yuki Kajiura anywhere I can get her. Yes, that sounded horrible on purpose. As far as Isuka goes, I'm not too beat about it. I'm not going to pass judgement on that up until it actually comes out and I can play it and see how well the music works in game.

Well, yeah. Music is important to me, but at the same time I haven't written of the games. Actually, I'm still quite excited about both of them.
But as long as there's room for improvement somewhere, I'll expect it hungrily.

 Re: When Guilty Gear Fails...
I don't actually play all that much GG- I have GGX, but I'm terrible at it and that's all- but I totally agree with the music thing. The only thing that saved Sonic Heroes' application of this logic was that some of the soundtrack just rocked and that they got decent singers for once- otherwise, no My Sweet Passion, no good and stylised melodies, no dice.
